Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}20/El.5.35 1st May 1935 Dear Fedden, Many thanks for your letter of the 29th, ENGINES F/HCM-2. I note that your car is now at Derby. With regard to your brakes and mudguards, whilst noting what you say, I do think that you should be definite and tell us what you want us to do regarding the letter, and unless I hear from you to the contrary by telephone or telegram to-morrow morning, I propose to act on the interpretation placed on your letter of the 16th ult. This I interpreted (see 3rd paragraph of my letter of the 17th) as meaning that, whether we succeed in eliminating the squeaks for use with cycle type wings or not, you would prefer not to run any risks but scrap the wings and have the new ones. Frankly we cannot guarantee that the brakes will never squeak whatever we do. When the chassis leaves Derby, there may not be a symptom of a squeak but in a few weeks' time, there may be. We should be delighted if we knew of a means of guaranteeing their total elimination under all conditions of weather etc. With regard to the pistons, the position is that to fit aerolite pistons to your used cylinders would mean that, to make a proper job of it, we should have to re-bore the cylinders and fir over-size aerolite pistons. This would be fairly expensive and the gain a total 4 or 5 HP. | ||
