REPORT ON MR.WARD'S VISIT TO DERBY,
MAY 10TH. 1939.

Present:

(1) Criticism of Experimental Bodies.

(a) Wind Noises.

It was reported that the wind noises on 3.B.50 were very bad, and also that the same defect occurred on the other experimental cars. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/FD.{Frank Dodd - Bodies} was requested to cure the wind noise on 3.B.50 by tape on the ventilating flaps and rubber in the door shuts, in order to demonstrate the defect. Mr. Ward was asked to provide a rubber strip cemented to the door and not the pillar on the shut edges, and to imprison a piece of flat sorbo strip between the pillar and the door on the hinge face. This scheme has been tried experimentally in Derby with success. The rubber does not pull off the door so easily as it does when fastened to the pillar on the shut face.

It has been found necessary to remount the doors because in setting the catches, apparently no allowance has been made for compression of the rubber bead.

The flap ventilators on the experimental cars with rubber seal are not satisfactory, as they are not air tight and cause wind noise and water leaks. We prefer the metal frame as fitted to 8.B.5. either felt or rubber lined or failing that a moulded rubber channel as on the majority of quantity produced cars. This complaint applies to 3.B.50. 30.G.VII. 10.B.5. and 11.B.5. in particular.
