COPY M.1136. 'Micro-Examination Report. To Sft{Mr Swift}/Mr.Goodall. HL4/AG.15.4.36. Laboratory. c.c BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Re. PHANTOM III VALVE SPRING. A tapered outer spring which you handed to us has been examined. The longitudinal mark noticed on the surface was not a seam but only a shallow drawing mark. The spring was of normal hardness and grain size, and free from decarburisation and seams in the section examined. We consider that the failure is due to the badly corroded surface. The enamel and scale has been removed, revealing a quite serious pitting of the surface, of a type which has been experienced several times recently. A bend test gave a poor result, which we have previously found to be typical of a corroded wire. H1. | ||
