Clutch Adjusting Screws.

We have taken up the question of the material with the Laboratory and they find the material is mixed, some screws being 5% Nic.Chrome, and others approx. 1% Nic. Manganese steel, therefore, our standard treatment is unsuitable.

We have had all the screws annealed at 550°C approx. and are locally hardening the tip and keeping production going.

Mr.Hardy is looking into the question to enable us to use a hexagon headed screw, so that we can manufacture the same.

Valve Springs.

In connection with this job we attach a copy of a report received from the Laboratory, namely H1.4/AG.15.4.36.

We are of the opinion that the corrosion does not take place during the manufacture at our Works. We have put our point of view before the Laboratory and they are inclined to agree with us, but they have not yet finished their investigations.

We have taken a spring from stock in the Fitting Dept. and find it is similar to the broken one. Therefore, we think all the stock should be stripped of enamel and inspected.

We have also arranged with our Material Test to have all the wire in their possession inspected by the Laboratory, and if same is passed to make some more springs immediately.

In connection with this job we have obtained a piece of wire which has been double quenched and upon examination it proves the pitted surface is not rust that occurs between operations on the springs.
