"MISS ENGLAND 11" AT DETROIT.

Aug. 25th. - Lifting tackle arranged and boat removed from water. Hull and installation inspected and found O.K. - cyls. cleared of oil - set of K.L.G. K.170 plugs fitted - shaft, rudder, and 16x14 prop. fitted - petrol tanks filled.

Aug.26th. - Final preparations for first run - gearbox, bijur, and drip feed tanks filled - all systems checked. At 5.10 p.m. the boat was taken out after filling with hot oil and running engines with clutches out. Duration of run 18 mins. with 4 mins. at full throttle three laps of the course being completed. Boost 10 - 10.5 lbs/sq.in. at 2800-50 R.P.M. Main oil 75-80 lbs/sq.in. Temps. O.K. Port engine water scoop pressure was excessive (15 lbs/sq.in.) and when on a port turn the control cock had to be fully opened to keep the outlet temperature below 85oC.
During this run the new gearbox breather fitted by R.H. fractured - the loose piece was removed and the tube flattened out. Approx. 2 gals. of oil were lost.
Plugs were removed and bores inspected, the same plugs being replaced for next run.
Oil and petrol filters cleaned - no traces of Petroflex pipe lining being found in the latter.
Rudder controls O.K.
The scoop and relief valves were inspected but nothing found to account for the excessive pressure

Aug. 28th. - A run of 27 mins. was made at 7.30 A.M. Eight mins. at full throttle, completing approx. five laps of the course.

Port engine still shewed excessive scoop pressure but by working the outlet temperature in conjunction with the pressure a fairly reasonable medium was maintained between them.

The water was fairly rough and the boat received a severe test.

Inspection shewed two bolts missing and all nuts off steady brackets (main shafts), the air scoops
