(2) “Miss England II” at Detroit. Cont’d.{John DeLooze - Company Secretary} and starting carburetter came adrift - pipes on grease gun and oil drill worked loose, also support on steering column. The shafts were relined, engine foot bolts tightened and the various pipes etc. replaced. Filters cleaned and bores inspected. In accordance with instructions from Derby, K.L.G.675 plugs were fitted for next run. Aug. 30th. - Two laps of the course were made, one of these being a fast timed lap. During this lap a petrol leak became apparent, and on the completion of the course the engines were switched off - it was then discovered that two unions on the petrol relief valve had shaken loose. Duration of run 10 mins. F.T. Boost 10.5 lbs/sq.in. at 2800-50 R.P.M. No trouble was experienced with the new plugs. Bores and filters inspected. Aug. 31st. - Several practice starts and turns were made. Duration of run 25 mins, 5 mins. at F.T. Starb. water relief valve stuck open when boat was stopped - port water scoop pressure gauge stuck at 3 lbs/sq.in. The gauge was replaced and the spring in the valve strengthened slightly. All the installation was finally checked, locked, or taped - filters cleaned, bores inspected - rudder and prop. taken off. The lock plates on the prop. were cracked and the rudder pin broken. These were replaced and the spare rudder post fitted, as the tail bearing showed signs of cracking up. It was decided to fit a new rudder pin after each race as it was obviously a weak point. Sept. 2nd. - A final run to prove the new rudder post etc. was made - duration 17 mins., 2 mins at F.T. The boat was finally prepared for the race - all oil and petrol removed, filters cleaned, bores inspected. New set of 675 plugs fitted. Sept. 6th. - Hot oil was put in the tank at the boat well, and the boat towed to the starting line where the engines were warmed up. Both relief valves stuck open when priming the engines. As an emergency measure the outlets were blocked with rag - this proved quite efficient, as it blew out immediately. The boat got under-way and the valves functioned normally. | ||
