1227 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}6/MH.{M. Huckerby} 28th. April 1938. Shell-Mex & B.P. Ltd., Shell-Mex House, Victoria Embankment, LONDON, W.C.2. For the attention of Mr.Todd. Dear Sirs, With regard to your visit on Tuesday when you discussed with Mr.Robotham the question of gearbox oils we agree that in those boxes requiring an oil thicker than SAE.30 we will recommend "Triple Shell". An SAE.50 oil gives the right compromise between synchromesh drag and silence. We are arranging the Bentley instruction book to recommend your oil and grease for the shock absorbers and water pump. With regard to steering boxes of the Marles type, wheel hubs, propeller shafts and water pumps we should like to try and get greater uniformity of the oil or grease nomenclature, with that used by the other companies. Steering boxes for some time to come will require an SAE.60 - 70 lubricant and the greases are unlikely to alter. We should be glad to have your views on this. Yours faithfully, for ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
