Date: 5th May 1938. Rolls-Royce Ltd., DERBY. Dear Sirs, FOR THE ATTENTION OF MR. GRYLLS. We wish to acknowledge with many thanks, yours of the 28th ultimo, from which we are glad to note that the recommendation for the lubrication of gear boxes in your production, will be shown as Triple Shell (Heavy), in cases where an oil is required which is heavier in viscosity than SAE.30. This proposition, we understand, applies to your present production and we assume, therefore, that this grade will be shown in current literature. We note your remarks regarding an SAE.50 giving the correct compromise between synchromesh drag and silence and in this connection, we would, at the same time, refer to your final paragraph covering steering boxes which require an SAE. 60 - 70 lubricant. You will remember in our letter of the 5th ultimo, we pointed out that Golden Shell (Extra Heavy) is on the top limit of the SAE.50 and more or less, the bottom limit of the SAE.60 and suggested at that time, that possibly Golden Shell (Extra Heavy) would be preferable for your gear box lubricant, to Triple Shell (Heavy).
