BY.2/G.24.5.39. C. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} TURBO TRANSMITTERS LIMITED. Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}7/E.16.5.39. I have had this matter before me as the result of information supplied to Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} I have had experience previously with three types of hydraulic transmission, but in each case the disability has been the low efficiency of the gear when working increased torques, that is, what we obtain by being in 1st and 3rd gears. I am getting in touch with Turbo Transmitters Ltd. as I would prefer to try the car over roads in Derbyshire, with which we are familiar. I appreciate that it is a hydraulic reduction gear and not merely a fluid flywheel; a rather similar device was submitted to us about 12 years ago by Vickers Ltd. (as they were then known) as the result of the work of a Mr. Coates. It has a 3 to 1 reduction ratio, i.e. the torque could be increased over engine torque three times, but it had not some of the refinements of design which are incorporated in Turbo Transmitters Ltd's scheme. The gear nearest to this which I know of, is that used by Leyland Co. on a certain number of their commercial vehicles. BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} | ||
