For our part, the rear tank is being re-designed to have :-

(a) A short filler on a level with the top of the tank. The cap to be made air tight.

(b) A central vent to the tank.

With regard to the tank unit, Mr. Royce wants to use the latest type of Sprengall pump delivering outside air, and a vent from the bell into the tank main vent with a .040 hole at the base of the bell.

You will observe that Mr. Royce is aiming at the abolition of the balance pipe, and by pumping the air free from petrol vapour and reducing the scale of the gauge to make the hand pump unecessary.

We should like to know what you think of the proposal in general. We ourselves are rather in favour of it as giving an installation which is much less likely to give trouble in erection or service, and one that we might have adopted from the first had the tank been suitable.

The writer will be away from the Works until Monday next.

We thank you for the expedition with which the gauge heads with the wire spring retaining device were forwarded.

Yours faithfully,

For Rolls-Royce Ltd.
