TO HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/LID{A. J. Lidsey}, FROM EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} X/588 EV{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}/8/25.11.32. Copy to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Re. BENSPORT. FIRST CAR. We thank you for your memo Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Lid.{A. J. Lidsey}5/MA.13.11.32. asking for a specification of the chassis as far as the body requirements are concerned; which has not been answered sooner because we have found it difficult to define any of the sections by quoting scheme drawings for the simple reason each drawing has had so many subsequent modifications made to it. What you really need is the production Dept. layouts and the L.O.P.s which would be the only safe way to ensure the complete collection of all the information. We realise that this information cannot be available in time for this first car so we are going to do our best to give you a brief specification but we will not be held responsible for its accuracy. BODIES The design of the body for this car is N. sch.3478. It is correct as far as the body goes but the dash to front axle dimension should be 38.000" and not 36.000". The same remarks apply to the design of the open body N.sch.3479. The wheelarch clearances N.sch. 3485 are correct. The scuttle isolation drawing N.sch. 3486 is correct, in principle, but none of the dimensions should be worked to. The bonnet and dash shape has been changed several times since this was drawn. The 1/4 scale layout of the body N.sch. 3487 is correct as far as the body is concerned but the dash to front axle dimension is wrong. The position of the bottom edge of the steering wheel is right but that of the box itself is not. The steering wheel should be 18 ins. dia. The dimensions for the overhang of the bonnet behind the dash are correct and so are those for positioning the body brackets, step irons and wing stays. The positions of the 1st, 2nd, battery & 3rd, crossmembers are correct. The dimensions to the petrol tank filler, which are supposed to be the same as those for Fer. 2, are correct. FRAME Layout of Frame, Tranmission and Steering, N.sch.3579 gives the full particulars of the frame, springs and fittings, steering column with wheel and box positions | ||
