Contd:-

You will notice that in the last gear sent to you, namely, the one of .66 ratio, the sunwheel anchorage was not universal in this way, and we are at present engaged on modifying this .66 gear so as to bring it into line with LeC 1015.

The experience upon which this alteration has been based is that of the Americans in testing their Liberty R.R. Epicyclic Gear. It was reported to us that they had experienced considerable trouble with their sun anchorage which was totally non-universal, and this led us to inspect the "Condor" simple sun anchorage, with the result that it could be seen that there was a sentiveness to manufacture errors. All trouble we hope, will be eliminated by the use of the anchorage coupling shewn on LeC.1015.

The reduction gear cage has been very carefully revised so as to make it easily machineable all over, wiht milling cutters of robust dimensions. This is a very important point, particularly in view of the fact that the forgings that one must use in War time are all of a rough heavy nature.

t

On the design atached the distance between the nose and tall bearings on the propellor shaft is slightly longer than on the original gear, the increase being in the neighbourhood of .300". We wish you to leave out the lubrication holes throught the sunwheel, and also the grooves on the larger diameter of the sunwheel bush as indicated on the drawing.
