RE "CONDOR" ENGINE - EPICYCLEC GEAR We send you herewith drawing Lec.1015 showing the simplified version of the .55 ratio "Condor" epicyclic gear You will notice that the spring damped anchorage for the sunwheel has been deleted, and that the casing and the nose of the box have been considerably simplified in consequence thereof. There are two points about this gear which we would draw to your attention, owing to them being of quite recent development, based on experience about which we have lately learnt: (1) We have suggested that a ball bearing may be tried on the planets in place of the usual roller bearings, and to accommodate the increased size of ball bearing a smaller propellor shaft has been used than in the first gear. This small propellor shaft has been made possible by use of a loose collect cone for the propellor hub seating. (2) The sun anchorage has been made with a universal coupling. This coupling is of the limited type, and is intended to accommodate manufacturing errors, and errors in alignment, due to bad erecting, so as to prevent the gear failing due to any of these causes.
