Dear Sirs,

I have to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 18th inst.

Immediately the Speedometer referred to arrived this morning, we examined the trip area and found that there was no breakage whatever, but, unfortunately, the hand-made guard which renders the hidden figures invisible, had moved slightly, due we think to the fact that it was hand-made and fitted by us probably under strain, which caused a slight collapse of the guard, sufficient to touch one of the stars and prevent it rising out of mesh.

This does not happen on the production instruments, because the guard is properly tooled and is finally "at rest" when fitted, and there is much more clearance on the production instruments than in this hand-made one.

You must have had about 1000 instruments with this type of trip by now, and the absence of returns with trip trouble indicates that there is nothing to fear in this direction. We ourselves are quite confident that this trip assembly is as good as it possibly can be.
