-2- Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd. 20th December, 1935. On the subject of the lubrication of cables with tallow to effect silence, we would like to state that we have no records here of noisy cables being returned from Derby under that specific complaint, and we have therefore been assuming that these flexes have not been giving trouble in respect of noise. We feel that with the use of tallow, although certainly it would, whilst the cable is working, tend to reduce noise, the risk is that when the car is stationary, say all night in the garage, the tallow would harden, and in those positions where the inner flex is contacting with the outer, there is a risk of the one sticking to the other to such an extent as to cause, we suggest, rather severe strain on the cable when starting. Perhaps it is merely a question of using as little as possible. On the other hand, our experience seems to indicate that Price's Vasagene A.{Mr Adams} effects a great reduction of noise with much less strain when cold. This grease does not harden. In regard to supplying the cables with a thick rubber tube covering, most certainly this would reduce noise and we can, of course, supply. Possibly the extra cost of this could be off-set slightly by the fact that you need never have nickel plated outer cables. We have experimented considerably on the Jaeger side to effect reduction of noise by this means. We shall be pleased to submit to you a flexible complete with heavy rubber covering, if you wish. We await your further wishes in this matter. The Speedometer above referred to is being returned to you to-day by Passenger Train. Always at your service. We beg to remain, Yours faithfully, For THE A.T. SPEEDOMETER CO. LTD. A H Buckland Director. | ||
