BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} FROM DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} Copy to HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} SECRET. ORIGINAL 'SS{S. Smith}' BRAKES. X7360 7420 The trouble of the rear brakes filling with water and mud is due to the lip on the guard overlapping the rib on the brake drum, so causing the latter to act as a pump, thus: like this. The axles we saw in the Exp. shop seemed to be all We see that on N. sch. 2472. the two are shewn flush, which is wrong because of manufacturing variations; on the Derby general arrangement the rib is slightly outside the lip, thus: thus: We suggest that more tolerance should be given, say Flush with face of carrier plate. Another advantage of this would be that when filing the linings for bedding purposes the guard would not interfere with the file. This also applies to the front brakes, the width of the guard lip there being also reamed, thus: Flush with carrier face. The drain holes in the drum which are shewn on N. sch. 2234. seem to be too many and too large. We suggest trying four - .212 holes. DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} | ||
