Rml/R.{Sir Henry Royce} May 2nd, 1939. The Avon India Rubber Co.,Ltd., Melksham, WILTS: For the attention of Dr. J.G. Mackay. Dear Sirs, We thank you for your letter of May 1st. To test any tyre of a new type really requires a minimum of 12 covers and tubes. Naturally, the number of cars we have to test on the 6.50 x 16 tyre is limited. For this reason, we do not think we shall be able to get reliable figures on more than 36 tyres of the type 6.50 x 16. We would, therefore, ask you to consider very carefully what you want to test before the tyres are sent out to France. At the moment, there is no indication that we require greater protection against concussion bursts than the tyre we have standardised, but further running may alter our opinion on this matter. Personally, we believe that we can ascertain the amount of reduction in tread thickness, which must be indulged in to be safe on the Continental model, by running on Brooklands before the car goes to the Continent. We note that you are going ahead with a 7.00/16 4-ply tyre, and anticipate that we shall have a car going on test on the Continent, which will require this sort of tyre, in about ten weeks' time. Yours faithfully, | ||
