All Phantom chassis on experimental running should be fitted with exhaust manifolds under one or other of the experiments which have been instructed with the object of cutting out corrosion of the system. These experiments are:-
a {Mr Adams} /- Use of 'Staybrite' pipes up to the front silencer connection.
b/- Treatment of the whole exhaust system by the Rustless Iron Company's process, by which they produce a coat of magnetic oxide of iron, (F.E.304) which closely adheres to the surface and by its regular composition and thorough coating, prevents any further rusting taking place.
c/- Exhaust Systems produced by the Coslettized process. Here again the whole system must be treated from the cast iron manifold to the fish-tailed outlet at the end of the system.
It is important that we should fix upon some method of preventing corrosion of the exhaust system.
Corrosion takes place under two headings:-
1. The flaking away of the pipes connecting the manifold to the front end of the silencer, as the result of the lagging round the pipes in question setting up regular temperatures in the neighbourhood of 700°C. on the pipes, if the engine is run at normal powers regularly.
2. A tendency for the silencer and swan neck to gradually corrode through, apparently as the result of a considerable amount of running on low power in driving, which apparently involves collection of a certain amount of moisture, or an acid nature, in the silencer, or would give a moist exhaust owing to the high expansion effect passing through the silencer, which humid atmosphere, combined with the presence of C.O.2, rapidly attacks and destroys ordinary mild steel plate.
We have had complaints from both points of view in service.
