Technical query sent to the Experimental Department regarding the lubrication of the servo drive in a gearbox.

We have made provision on the Bensport gearbox for the retention of as much oil as possible in the rear compartment of the box when the car is descending a steep gradient, with the idea that the servo drive shall received oil thrown up by the 2nd. speed pinion. We have also arranged for oil to be fed to the rear compartment so that the oil level shall be maintained for the servo drive lubrication so long as the 3rd. speed pinion is dipping in oil. These features were incorporated in the P.2. box., but the latter feature has now been deleted, we believe, with the introduction of the long solid reverse shaft. Would the Expl.Dept.kindly ascertain the answers for us to the following points on this problem: (1) When the 2nd. speed pinion is just dipping in oil, is any oil thrown to the top of the box, and if so, at how low a speed does this stop - (a) 2nd. speed engaged, (b) not engaged? (2) Does any oil reach the servo gears? (3) Does the surging of oil between front and rear compartments on a level road due to accelerating and braking prevent the oil feeding scheme, as used on pre-synchro mesh P.2., from keeping the rear compartment always full to the level of the bottom of the gap in the ball bearing.
