AUTO-PULSE ELECTRO-MAGNETIC PETROL PUMP. X3800

A single and a duplex unit of the Auto-Pulse petrol pump were brought over from U.S.A. by Mr. Nadin, at Mr. Olley's instigation.

A description and illustrations of this apparatus are contained on the photostat sheets herewith.

The pumping element is a compressible chamber of the sylphon tube type, this being connected to suction inlet and delivery outlet, through the suction and delivery ball valves respectively. Of the concertina motion of the sylphon tube, the expansion or suction stroke is produced electro-magnetically by a solenoid, the motion of which at the same time compresses the spring supplying it with the energy necessary to effect delivery of the petrol on the return stroke. By means of automatic contacts, the current is automatically cut in and off so that the vibratory action takes place electric bell-wise. In addition to the main magnetising coil there is a short-circuited winding -

(1) To suppress the tendency to spark at the contacts.
(2) To assist the electric bell stroking effect of the instrument by delaying the magnetisation of the core, it being remembered that electrical contact is made for as much of the out-stroke as of the in-stroke.
