-3- when running on the coil. A noticeable feature with the magneto is that more misfires on the pick up are noticed than when using the coil. With the ignitions fully retarded, the misfires are very noticeable. It is standard for noise. The contact points show no sign of pitting. WATER PUMP TO L.O.P. E.54728.- Leak of water has occurred from the gland of the water pump. This became more noticeable at 5.000 miles. We dismantled same, and found the outer gland packing had deteriorated. New gland packings have been fitted. FLYWHEEL & CLUTCH TO L.O.P. G.51601. New Ferodo fabric fitted to Clutch. Stronger clutch springs to E.S. 3030.- The clutch, during the first part of the mileage, was inclined to jagger. It has improved during the running and is now quite smooth upon engaging. There has been no sign of slipping at any speed during the test. The load to disengage the clutch is somewhat heavier than the present standard. The clutch stops freely when cold, but when hot is rather slow. GEAR BOX & ACTUATING GEAR TO L.O.P. G.53463.- The gears generally are quite good. No trouble has been experienced with the change speed mechanism. Slight oil leaks are prevalent from the various gear box joints. No serious loss of oil has taken place. The replenishment of gear oil during the 5.000 miles has been .083 of a gallon. SERVO MOTOR MECHANISM TO L.O.P. G.52118 & M.S. E970. New Cotton 'A' Friction Lining E.34030 Fitted.- The Servo has been efficient and particularly smooth in action. A very slight squeak developed, which was cured by doping with a few drops of oil on the fabric. PROPELLER SHAFT & UNIVERSAL JOINT TO L.O.P. G.54037.- This has remained in a perfectly good condition, and no oil has been lost from the universal joints. REAR AXLE & REAR BRAKES ETC.- There has been a period from the axle at 45 M.P.H. The brake drums and brake shoes when examined were in a very good condition. They required adjusting one full turn of the nut at 5.000 miles. Very slight squeak from the brakes has been noticeable upon finally coming to rest. FRONT AXLE & BRAKES TO L.O.P. G.53576. Brake Shoes lined with Ferobestos.- The front brakes have been efficient and smooth in motion. The damping segments were taken off the drums during the test to conform with the practice of the Phantom. During the first day's run after displacing the segments, slight squeaks were noticeable, but these entirely disappeared, and no squeaks have been heard during the remainder of the run. It has not been necessary to adjust the front brakes. The drums show slight scoring. FRONT SPRINGS & FITTINGS TO ARGT. F.56568. FRONT SPRINGS F.55524 GROOVED FOR BIJUR LUBRICATION OF PLATES. CADMIUM PLATED SPRINGS. LOADS: F/S 660 lbs. O/S 658 lbs.- From an outside examination, we cannot find any flaws having taken place in the spring leaves. The clips have remained firm. The lubrication appears to be O.K. We cannot detect any wear in the shackles and pins. REAR SPRINGS & FITTINGS TO ARGT. F.56088. REAR SPRINGS F.55509 ROLLED BEAM TYPE GROOVED FOR BIJUR LUBRICATION OF PLATES. SPRINGS CADMIUM PLATED. LOADS: F/S 814 lbs. O/S 842 lbs.- The springs were examined from outside only. No flaws can be detected in any of the spring leaves. The lubrication | ||
