RE. BROKEN VALVE SPRINGS.

With reference to your enquiry re the above, I only know of two cases of this taking place on all our post-war cars.

On inspection of one of the broken valve springs, the fracture appears to have been due to an original flaw.

The sample was sent to Mr. Hives for his attention, should he consider it necessary. I did not think at the time, however, that the fault was sufficiently bad to justify any further action. If you require to make any further investigation, no doubt you will be able to obtain this spring from Mr. Hives.

I am sending you, however, a sample of a broken tappet spring. We also have had one or two cases of this breaking. On both the valve and tappet springs, however, a very careful inspection is being made during routine of test, and we have had no serious trouble.
