S.S. SEQUENCE STARTER

X7655

Further to our EFC2/T26.1.29 referring to the trials of S.S. starter engagement in our laboratory, further trials have now been made.

Firstly a systematic series of tests with gradually reducing voltage, using the same pinion as in the tests recorded in the above mentioned report, was made. This being done with three different arrangements of springs and packings merely confirmed the unsatisfactory nature of the engagement generally and did not show up clearly and definitely the first weakness as the supply voltage was reduced step by step.

We then proceeded with tests of a backed off pinion to EL/M20.12.28 the results of which, though not perfect, are definitely more satisfactory. The type of jam described in our EFC2/T26.1.29 has disappeared with this pinion, but we still have experienced the engaging corner jam which this backed off pinion was designed to overcome. It turned out not to be a case of the magnitude of the supply & voltage (which would determine the vigour of the engagement) because though the jams were certainly more frequent at a lower voltage they also occurred at unduly high voltages. These results refer to trials using the arrangement of main spring which had previously been found most satisfactory. In order
