Dear Mr. Hives,

I have now got my 3½ litre Bentley back from the Works, and wish to thank you for the trouble you have taken in the matter.

I think the strange behaviour of the petrol pumps was undoubtedly due to the petrol vapourising at high altitudes, and the pumps were in fact attempting to pump vapour instead of liquid petrol. I remember that the same trouble was experienced with the Lancia Dilambda and was overcome by removing the petrol pumps from under the bonnet and installing them at the rear end of the chassis in order to ensure the petrol being cold on entering the pumps.

If you decide to carry out an alteration in the position of your petrol pumps I should be very glad if you would let me know as I should like to have it done on my own car.

Sincerely yours,

Bernard Hopps.
