-2- Fitting and Assembly Criticisms Raised Expl. Dept. Production Dept, Remarks 6. The thickness of the adjusting washer for the axle shaft bearing is very critical and difficult to determine. A series of washers is useless - each washer must be ground to suit. If an internal nut were provided the adjusting washer could be eliminated, and it may be found that the simplified assembly would compensate for the additional cost. Nut as suggested would no doubt prove more economical than adj. washers. Additional machining cost involved by separate nut will be compensated by greatly simplified assembly. 7. To ensure correct alignment of the axle casing we suggest that this piece be bored in position with the centre casing. With the present scheme it is possible for the bearing bore to be .00075 out of alignment with the pinion when the maximum tolerances are taken into consideration. It is hoped to eliminate entirely the need for boring bridge piece in position by making bridge piece integral with bearing. This scheme would render it possible to reduce dia. of bridge piece spigot bore in axle casing & provide fully circular bore. 8. Very accurate measuring is necessary to obtain the correct preload on the bearings of the pinion assembly. This is the most serious difficulty on the axle, since it is imperative to obtain the correct setting of the gears if silent running is to be ensured. Question of bearing makers supplying bearings with necessary preload allowance on faces is being investigated. 9. The adjusting washers fitted to the axle shaft bearing housing make the brake carrier plates non-interchangeable. From a production view-point this is undesirable, and we recommend that consideration be given to this point to obviate handing of these components. This objection will disappear if hub bearings are retained by means of an internal nut. | ||
