To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} Copy to Bn.{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} Copy to EFC. X-4159 Dal/CB3.8.20. X.4174. MODIFIED PETROL TANK LEVEL INDICATOR. X.3896. We send herewith several suggestions for the proposed level indicator. Since we took this job up we have X-4159 been given to understand that one of the most important applications of the level indicator is in connection with the Octroi system in France, and that the regulations of this system are very strict and require the instrument to read in litres and to be accurate to half a litre, which is rather more than .1 gallon. The Simms petrol gauges are objected to on the grounds of not fulfilling the Octroi regulations. We therefore thought that it was desirable in making our gauge to endeavour to arrange it so that it would fulfill these regulations. N. schemes 518 & 519 have been done with this object in view. We have discarded the direct operator arrangement as it did not seem possible to get sufficient accuracy without a very large dial, and we have somewhat come to the conclusion that we must have gear wheels in the instrument in order to get a reading all round the dial. For the same reason we have discared the vertical spiral operated instrument as it does not seem possible to make it within the required degree of accuracy. With the same object in view we have shewn on "N" scheme 519 wells into which the float dips so as to read accurately the amount of petrol in the tank, both full and empty. We are not sure whether this is necessary as people might be prepared to assume that the last two gallons were there, this being contained in the reserve Contd. | ||
