COPY. X153 10th July 1911. Re Enclosing Change Speed Mechanism. The change speed mechanism and brake could, of course, be enclosed in a box casing, but to do so would give this piece a heavy and cumbersome appearance, while at the same time the necessary large slots, for levers, would still allow dirt and water to get in, the more so as this bracket has a forward inclination. Further, any such accumulation of grit would not be visible and would, therefore, never get cleared away, and in consequence these accumulations would be an increasing quantity, so that in the end it would appear that closing in the gear would result in getting more grit in the working parts. Finally, such closing in would make lubrication and inspection more difficult and, therefore, less likely to be properly attended to. (SD) R.W.H.B. | ||
