-(3)- SCHEME | ADVANTAGES. | OBJECTIONS. --- Sch. No.5. BY's suggestion for offsetting tappet instead of camshaft- See LeC. 2662. | Cyl. blocks, heads, timing gears, valve mechanism, all interchangeable. | Timing gears & crank-chamber on present R.H. SS.{S. Smith} would have to be altered, or alternative-ly the camshaft centre lift unchanged and tappets displaced. Tappets require addit-ional feature to ensure correct way round. --- Sch. No.6. Arrange the L.H. engine with the present cam-shaft centre but inclined concentric tappets-R5/M3229. [Diagram of camshaft and tappets labeled 'LEFT HAND'] | Present R.H. engine would be unaltered. Cyl. blocks, heads, timing gears, all interchangeable. | The L.H. engine would not have the desaxe camshaft and the push-rod would be slightly out of line with the tappet. --- Sch. No.7. This scheme deals with the possibil-ities of including a new feature e.g. oil submerg-ed{J. L. Edwards} camshaft, while and if alterations are being made. R5/M3.2.29. says "it might pay us to leave SS.{S. Smith} as it is & make the L.H. SS.{S. Smith} oil submerged if we cannot alter. our first SS.{S. Smith} to the same. [Diagram of camshaft and tappets labeled 'LEFT HAND'] L.H. engine with camshaft raised for oil trough sch. | Present SS.{S. Smith} engine left un-altered until suitable oppor-tunity occurs. L.H. engine would have tappets run-ning under oil. Cyl. blocks and heads inter-changeable. | This probably leaves us with only the crankshaft pinion interchangeable in the wheelcase. | ||
