Bentley / Mr Barrington} - Mr. E.E. BLANC. --------------------------------- We thank you for your Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}5/JA.2.12.36 the contents of which have had our careful attention. We very much regret that trouble was caused by "overlapping of instructions" and the following is our report upon the matter:- Upon the removal of the main bearing caps, we found the lower halves of the bearings to be in a very poor condition and would therefore, have to be changed. As the owner had specially requested us to execute the repairs as rapidly as possible, we, in order to save time, requested our stores on the 20th. ult. to order a set of white metal main bearings, similar to those received in the past, or with internal dimensions suitable for use with our Martell reamer. Our order n°. II9I was sent in the usual way. Upon further dismantling of the engine and the removal of the crankshaft, we then, to our surprise, discovered that the crankshaft would have to be reground etc.. We then reported the matter fully to you as per our Sr/VA5/GM.24.II.36. As we were then not in a position to know whether you would send us a new crankshaft or request us to send you the crankshaft for re-conditioning. We thought it advisable to mention that if you agreed to our tackling the crankshaft job, we should then need special .030" undersize bearings. We did not cancel the bearings called for in our order n°. II9I, because we were out of stock of W/M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} main bearings, and they consequently would be very useful to us. We regret that we omitted to inform you that our stores had on the 21st. ult. ordered a set of standard W/M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} bearings. We trust that you will find the above quite clear.
