TO RY FROM DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} C. to -BJ. HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} ORIGINAL DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}2/M29.10.26. 20HP. BEVEL GEARS. Mr. Royce wishes to try lower gearz ratios on the 20HP. This will be done probably in connection with the hypoid gear axle for that car, but in the meanwhile it seems likely that it will be desirable to test a lower gear on the present axle if found possible. We believe for one thing that it is very doubtful whether the engine can be allowed to run any faster on account of its main torsional period, and this point will require further discussion. We are sending you however N. scheme 2292. herewith shewing you a proposal for a spiral bevel gear giving a 5.2 ratio which will go in the standard axle case, and is stressed as far as we can calculate no higher than the present 11/50 bevel gears. We think that you should not do anything with this gear until you hear further from us, but if in the meanwhile you have any remarks to make with reference to the use of an odd D.P. like 4.7 we should be glad to have them.
