EAC. 9. & 10. HYPOID GEAR - REAR AXLE.

Herewith we send N. scheme 2287. shewing the slight modifications to the rear axle gearbox to enable lower ratio gears to be got in.

It will be seen that we have moved the tail bearing to the rear and reduced its size. It compares favourably as regards load with the present 20HP. bearing in the same position.

The side plates have been moved out .1" a side and the axle tube shortened a corresponding amount.

The construction of the differential box has also been slightly altered, otherwise the box is intended to be exactly the same as N. scheme 2275.

With reference to locking the nut retaining the outer housing of the Schatz bearing on the bevel wheel, it was originally intended to do this by rivetting, but we think it will perhaps be simpler to fit a locking plate as you suggest.

Mr. Royce wishes the gear shewn on this drawing, and on N. scheme 2288., namely, 11/47., to be made, and also another gear of approximately the present ratio shewn on N. scheme 2289.

Since we have worked them out we also send you N. scheme 2284., 10/47., and N. scheme 2290., 12/47., but nothing should be done with these two until further instructions.
