To Hd.{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy} (FOR DEPOT SHEET) Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/NRC.{N. R. Chandler}17/JH.27.8.37. 312 Phantom III Clutches. Will you please draw up a Depot sheet on the following lines :- A cushioned driven plate having six spring plates behind one of the facings, has been standardised, and will very shortly be fitted on production. The facings, for the present, are Thermoid. A small number of these plates have already ben issued, to deal with cases of complaint on customers' cars, but at present supplies are limited, so that we cannot as yet fit them in every case where there is a suspicion of a 'jagger' but in cases of customers complaints, or where we find an appreciable jagger on test, even if customers have not complained, a cushioned plate should be fitted, because to fit another standard plate would be likely to mean dismantling again after a few thousand miles. The old plates removed should be kept pending further instructions, as we have in hand a modification which if success-ful may enable us to use them for replacements, instead of fitting new plates complete. We would call particular attention to the fact that these cushioned plates are very susceptible to damage in transit and subsequent handling with the result that they may be found to run out of truth. They are passed to have a run-out not exceeding approx. .010, and if the run-out greatly exceeds this figure, difficulty may be experienced in getting the clutch to stop. If it is necessary to re-set this plate, particular care must be taken to avoid applying pressure to the unsupported part of the facing between the springs, as the facing material is easily cracked or brakes. When fitting the cushioned plate, it is usually necessary to fit a packing ring between the clutch cover and the flywheel. | ||
