To Wd.{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead} from EFC. X4021 EFC5/T30.11.26. X.4021. AERO TYPE WATFORD IS.12 MAGNETOS.NOS.83134/5. Please find attached copy of my assistant's report WB.{Mr Brazier/Mr Bell}114 in connection with these magnetos. I had copies of this report in readiness to hand to Messrs. Norths during their last visit, but am afraid these were overlooked. I am therefore sending these copies on to you, dated as originally. You will remember that the various points contained therein were discussed at the time of their visit and that since that time these magnetos have been again removed from the engine and are at the moment with us. We have examined the rotor and armature tunnel for oil, and although there is little evidence of the oil on the rotor itself, there is evidence of the deposition of oil in the armature tunnel, and there seems to have been a good deal of oil about in the neighbourhood of the bearings. So far as we can gather from enquiry, we have no reason to believe that these magnetos were over-oiled through their own lubricators. Therefore it does not appear that the felt packing ring is entirely effective. It would rather suggest making the experiment of putting on the new further magnetos and not giving them any additional oil (i.e. beyond the small amount originally put in by the makers), and then observing if the contact breaker still gets fouled with oil.
