ENGINE MAIN OIL PIPE. Y9190

In reply to your memo. BY7/F29124.,
referring to LeC.1661., the method of making a joint with the main oil pipe was originated by Mr. Royce and very carefully considered by him before adoption, we cannot see why there should be any difficulty in producing this job in quantities so that a consistently good joint will be assured. It would appear to us to be a simple operation to taper ream the lower half from the elbow socket hole to the required dia. by using a piloted taper reamer possibly fitted with some sort of adjustable collar stopping against the elbow joint face. Also we think the oil pipe after being fixed in the elbow could have a taper ground on the nose to the required dia. relative to the elbow face. We do not think any further precautions than these would be necessary but time would shew whether special attention would be required to ensure the elbow joint faces being square with the pipe axis.
The pipe is intended to be in hard drawn brass for the purpose of stiffness.

E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}
