With reference to attached telegram from Mr. Royce., we do not consider that the fitting of the extra rings can wait for the result of a 10,000 miles test before being adopted. This modification is simply going back to a practice which was used on pre-war pistons. We are pushing on with tests with this arrangement and have already completed a 50 hours bench test which has shown that the extra rings high up are an improvement over what we are using now. We have also one car fitted with these pistons which isrunning about.

We think that in a case where a serious fault is found on the cars and one which it is obvious to see the cause of, we must make some alteration immediately. We cannot allow cars to go out knowing that they are likely to develop a fault.
