re: "Paulin Bentley" B.27.LE
-----------------------

We have now dismantled the engine, in order to ascertain the extent of the damage caused by the seizure of N° 1 big-end bearing and failure of the connecting rod on Montlhéry Track on the 18th instant.

The following is our Report:

Big-end bearings N° 1. Completely seized only powdered particles of it could be found.
N° 2. Damaged by flying bits.
N° 3, 4, 5 & 6 had just commenced to overheat all big-end bearings (with exception of N° 1) had tightened up.

Main Bearings: Scored otherwise OK. The scoring has been caused by particles of aluminium having found their way into the oil circulation.

Crankcase gallery pipe: Damaged at front end by flying bits. All soldered joints found to be OK.

Crankshaft: N° 1. Journal badly scored, same will be re-ground to a smaller diameter and shaft will then be sent to Aubert and Duval's for re-nitriding.

Upper half of crankcase: N° 1. Web cracked and case bulged near dynamo housing, plus minor damage by flying bits. We have taken the upper and lower halves to Messrs. Lassal the aluminium welding experts who have informed us the both halves can be efficiently repaired and with all security. The lower half is cracked and bulged in two places.

It will be necessary to change the following principal parts:

1 Cylinder Block
1 Connecting rod complete
N° 2 Big-end bearing
1 Exhaust valve
1 Crankcase gallery pipe
1 Set of main bearings.

We have a cylinder block, etc., in stock, certain other parts however have been ordered from the Works.
