OLDSMOBILE GEARBOX. We were very concerned when E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} reported that during his holiday the Oldsmobile jumped out of 2nd gear on the over-run, as the type of coupling used on the Oldsmobile was more or less what was copied in the Universal gearbox. We naturally thought that the Oldsmobile would be the same as the Chevrolet or the Buick. We, therefore, dismantled the gearbox to have a look at the second speed sliding piece. Unlike the Buick or the Chevrolet, none of the driving teeth were relieved. We, therefore, carried out this operation on the Oldsmobile, leaving only six teeth to take the over-run torque. On trying the car again on the road it no longer jumps out of second gear, which gives us reason to believe that the coupling on the universal box will not give any trouble.
