Re:- Crankshaft - Cracked Centre Bearing Further to my previous memo on this subject, I have been able to examine the shaft under higher magnification in H1/GLT's Lab, and am able to add the following information:- (a) The axial crack on the centre bearing is not due to stress in normal running. (b) The centre bearing shows crazing cracking as a result of over heating of this journal. This must have run very hot. (c) The straight crack might be a result of an internal defection in the casting and ingot condition. Its probable cause being a gas hole set up during 'casting' and 'cooling' operation which does not weld up in the 'rolling' and 'cogging' operation. (d) The cracks in the radius are in my opinion, the result of bearing running hot and are not due to mis-grinding as I thought in the first place. As the crank is not suitable for further work, I am cutting it up to varify the various points discussed. By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} By | ||
