DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} TO HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} (Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence.) e.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} to BJ. WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} ORIGINAL R1/M17.4.26. Rec'd at WW. evening of 19.4.26. re. RR. HYDRAULIC SHOCK DAMPERS. X735 X8410 X6520 X8430 We could not fit these to 7-EX. satisfactorily because of the second wing stay preventing the damper body going back and because the engine suspension prevented the front bolts going forward. (1) We could make a possible and really easy application if the front 2 bolts had their centres altered from 3" to 2 3/8" so as to suit the holes of the RR. friction damper. (2) The lever looks as though it should be say .5" longer to come to the same position as the ball of the RR. friction one and only needs the connecting rod lengthening. (3) If our wing stays are made standard it would be better if the second one was say .3" further back. Great efforts should be made to quickly get these correct and into production as they seem a necessary and possible improvement of the riding, steering, and tyre situation, which is so acute. WW. and Derby should get together and put in the final corrections, whatever is thought desirable and possible in the time. It may be that we must go on with the 3" centres and only push the damper body further back than was possible on 7-EX. (because of the wing stay) but this would seem to demand a longer lever on the damper. Unless I am entirely mistaken (but I looked at it for half an hour) those engaged upon this work should have seen the difficulties we have met, the worst being the confusion between the 2 front bolts and the radiator-engine support fitting, even if we had used the drilling jig. I will excuse the second stay and rear end as special to 7-EX. and between Messrs Evernden and Hardy. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
