XJ553c To Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} From GWH{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} Hotel de France Chateauroux Indre 2.4.33. B E N S P O R T The spare petrol pump fitted gave out on the road during yesterday's run. The failure was caused by the breaking of the two fibre rollers or blocks on the spring controledlever. The blocks limit the movement, and without these blocks the magnet holds the lever, and it will not release. The failure of the first pump was partly caused by the breaking of the fibre blocks, and the failure of the springs to operate, the mechanism getting over the centre. We believe we can make it work satisfactory by fitting rubber blocks instead of the fibre. We reported on the 31/3/33 that the failure of the pump had not affected the running of the car. We have since come to the conclusion that the failure must have occurred just prior to the car finishing its mileage, as the failure was not found until we were testing the pumps in the garage. We had noticed that one appeared to be doing all the clattering. It is obvious from yesterdays results that this must be the case. The pump that so far has not failed is slightly different from the other two in respect of the spring blade contact. The end of the blade holding the contact point is spread out having two small rivets instead of the single contact rivet. The contact blade is stiffer and the action of the mechanism is more definate. [Handwritten diagram notes] fibre blocks broken contact blades We have made a considerable improvement in loss of oil, and oil leaks from the engine by making the filler pipe to the crankcase, the breather. It has practically cured the high speed trouble. The present one fitted is altogether | ||
