X2465 Exptl. Dept. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}9/KW. 28th August, 1934. Messrs. Shell-Mex & B.P. Ltd., Shell-Mex House, Victoria Embankment, LONDON, W.C.2. Attention of Mr. Callingham. Dear Sirs, Mr. Robotham has asked me to send you figures for tooth pressures needing extreme pressure lubricants. One of our requirements at present is a thin E.P. oil of the same viscosity as engine oil for use in gearboxes. The information we can give you about this is that (1) an 8 D.P. spur gear with 7400 lbs/in. pitch line loading requires an extreme pressure lubricant all the time, and (2) a 7 D.P. gear with 6100 lbs/in. must be run in on an E.P. oil and can then be run on engine oil only. The other trouble we experience is of the ball bearings becoming caked with a hard carbon deposit when run with sulphur compound oils. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
