MOMENT OF INERTIA OF GOSHAWK FLYWHEEL AND CLUTCH. 44244

The moment of inertia of the Goshawk flywheel complete with clutch was determined experimentally by means of the 'Bifilar Suspension' method in exactly the same way as stated in report on 40/50 HP. and EAC. flywheels.

The following results were obtained :-

Length of supporting wires (l) = 6.64 ft.
Distance between wires (d) = 1.166 ft.
Weight of complete flywheel (W) = 100.81 lbs.
Time for 30 oscillations = 69 secs.
∴ time for one " = 2.3 secs.

Rad. gyration)^2 = K^2 = (t^2 d^2 g) / (16 π^2 l)

= (2.3^2 x 1.166^2 x 32.2) / (16 π^2 6.6406)

= 0.2209 ft^2.

∴ Rad. of gyration (K) = 0.47 ft.

Mom. of inertia (I) = (W/g) K^2 = (100.81 x .2209) / 32.2

= 0.691 units.

MOMENT OF INERTIA = 0.691 units.
RADIUS OF GYRATION = 0.47 ft. OR 5.64 in.
