| To EP. {G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} from Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to EY. cf to Wor. {Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} ORIGINAL HS {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} 7/LG6. 7.21. X3719 RE CARS FOR AMERICA, 40/50, SPRINGFIELD With reference to your EP {G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} /Thn6/H6.7.21. The following are our replies to the Items which concern the Experimental Department. Item 3. 6-ringed Pistons with larger Oil Groove. X2809 X3666 From the correspondence we have received from America, the suggestions they have made for increasing the oil groove and the number of holes applies to the 4-ringed pistons. On the 6-ringed pistons the number of holes and the size of the groove had been increased about 100% compared with the 4-ringed pistons. We should like confirmation from America that the tests they have carried out in which they have reduced the over-oiling by increasing the number of holes, have been on the 6-ringed pistons. Item 4. Petrol Tank Filters. X3701 We have already reported favourably on the drilling of the holes at the top of the filter in order to increase the rate at which the petrol tank can be filled. A copy of this report was sent to EP. {G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} and a copy to R.R.Inc. (Hs {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} 3/LG13.4.21) Item 7. Shutter Scheme for Radiator. X3901 Mr. Royce has all the particulars and I am afraid we cannot do any thing more. Item 8. Double thrust scheme for Rear Axle. X4150 We have pushed this for all we are worth and believe now that we have come to a definite decision. Item 9. Handles for Bonnets. X4297 This has been taken up with Mr. Royce several times. We cannot do anything else. Item 10. Position of sparking plugs. X.1812 We do not see that we can do much good in carrying out further tests on the position of sparking plugs. The advantages and disadvantages of the different positions of the plugs is well-known. We consider that as regards the position of plugs, this is not an alteration in design but what we would call an alteration to the adjustment of them which must be left in the hands of the people at Springfield. contd:- | ||
