n7960. To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} re 58-GN. Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}6/E12.12.32 Referring to Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}13/E5.12.32 and your Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}9/MJ.6.12.32, PN{Mr Northey} and Cx.{Major Len W. Cox - Advertising Manager} have tried the car. Eh. has not been out on it because he was indisposed at the time. They agree that the steering is a great improvement. They also agree that the intake silencer has very beneficial effects on the roar and fuss which were previously noticeable on this car with the new type carburetter. Re Exhaust, we agree that the resonance exhaust as fitted to 58-GN is a very great improvement from the point of view of the 'chuff-chuff' on that fitted to 19-EX. It is still a little noisier than the present standard, but not sufficient to prevent us passing it in view of the statement in one of your memos that, if we do not have it, we are likely to get other trouble, i.e. with exhaust valves. I believe the resonance exhaust was submitted to 10,000 miles on 19-EX, and I should just like to make sure that the modifications made since then are not such as to warrant in any way the necessity of further extensive tests. The 'flat spot' to which I previously referred is no better. The effect is just as if somebody had momentarily switched off the ignition. The starting is perhaps a little better since Kennett adjusted the tappets but still not as reliable as on 19-EX or the former standard. I understand that you will now send some one to London to deal with these two points, and doubtless you will let me know when he will come so that the car may be available. | ||
