VICE-CHAIRMAN T.C. SKINNER, M.I.A.E. MANAGING DIRECTOR ADDERLEY PARK, BIRMINGHAM, 8. YOUR REF: OUR REF: RLK/HJ. 3rd July/1939. Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd., DERBY. For the attention of Mr. Dixon. Dear Sirs, We are sending you under separate cover two experimental pumps. We find that one is inclined to get a water hammer noise with these if they are mounted on the frame and we have found the best arrangement generally is to mount them low down on the front engine bearer and to connect up with flexible pipes. The noise produced by the pumps is not mechanical as we have faked up pumps with no clearance between parts which could produce noise and with rubber valves which also were of such a thickness that the downward motion of the plunger was considerably restricted and the noise remains the same. It seems, therefore, that it is produced on the up-stroke of the piston by the piston accelerating the long column of liquid. Yours faithfully, for THE S.U. CARBURETTER CO.LTD.
