CHASSIS 26-EX. Your Hm{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs}17/Dn/20.11.30.

Will you please say whether the squeaks were from the front or rear brakes. We understand that a new device for preventing front brake squeaks was fitted to this car and we are therefore rather anxious to know whether it had not maintained its efficiency.

With regard to the deterioration of the steering. We should like your opinion as to whether this was really due to the alteration and adjustment of the side or cross steering tube, or due to the alteration in the Hartford shock absorber loads. We do know that Hartfords will not maintain their loads consistently and that this car would lose some of its high speed charm without the Hartfords.

On the other hand, we have no definite information as to how much the poundage on the cross steering tube varies in service. If you have the figure of the poundage on this cross steering tube when the car came into Sevres we should very much like to know what it was as it would tell us how much the poundage had become reduced with running. We will take the opportunity of examining the ball pads and springs when the car is next at Derby to see if we can see signs of any excessive wear to cause the trouble.

If it is the trouble that you frequently come up against in Paris, where, of course, you get a collection of people who drive at high speeds and therefore fundamentally get steering critics, we should be glad to have your experiences.

With regard to the side steering tube, we are somewhat mystified as the loads on this are not heavy and we have never readjusted one once it has been set on any of our experimental cars. Perhaps you would say what was the relative value of the alteration you made to this component and how this alteration was
