Dear Sirs,

We have yours of the 20th inst. (received only on the 24th) HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/WST.2/KT, re battery for Bentley Sports Chassis. You are quite right when you say that the battery that had been decided upon between us was the 6.GLD.11A.(7/32") With regard to the questions re modifications on this that you ask, the following is the information:-

If you incorporate into the same size of battery, that is to say the same size container, all the Rolls-Royce features such as 5/32" positive plates, wood and ebonite separators, you would only be able to have a 7-plate section which would have a capacity of 47 ampere hours instead of 63, but it would definitely not have sufficient plate area for starting and would be almost certain to fail on most cold days. Its weight would be 74 lbs. as against 78 and it would cost about 2/- less.

A good compromise would be a 6.BPHL-9 with 1/8" positive plates and wood and ebonite separators, capacity 55 ampere hours, weight 77 lbs., cost about 3/- more. Probably just good enough for starting if the car has battery ignition.

Whilst the complete battery would be of standard dimensions and easy to replace, both these sets of groups we have mentioned would not be standard and it would be difficult to replace the actual plates though as the dimensions of each cell are standard, some standard groups could be put into the cells.

If you want to swell out the 6.GL{G. Linnett}-11 type into one with all the Rolls-Royce features, then you would have to have the next size larger container in order to take the thicker plates and the battery would be 2.13/16" longer, all other dimensions the same and weight about 5 lbs. or 6 lbs. more.

We understood from Mr. Elliott that he was very anxious to
