through a press button or equivalent switch and (B) the other being the main circuit passing through the starting motor.

The former is controlled by the press button.

The latter is controlled by the magnetically operated main circuit switch (3)

The press button (controlling circuit) is again divided into three branches (one passing through the actuating mechanism, and then on through the motor to turn this round slowly, while the actuating magnetic apparatus couples the motor to the engine to be started by pressing the pinion into the gear, or the two halves of the jaw clutch together) and the (second) a small current passing through a solenoid, the core of which is rendered slow moving by a dashpot or other suitable device, and after giving a slight period of time for the somewhat slow and silent coupling of the starter motor to the engine, this apparatus is used to make contact for a third branch of this circuit which passes round the magnets of the usual magnetically operated main switch, which latter is not only used to connect the battery direct to the starter, but at the same instant breaks the circuit of branch (one) and so renders the actuating device inoperative and silent, which is the second and principal object of this invention".

Yours sincerely,

(Signed) F.H.Royce.
