RE. 16-G4. ENGINE MOUNTING.

We obtained the best results for smoothness of engine and freedom from 'booms' by attention to the rear engine feet. We had to dismantle the engine feet brackets owing to the cups being rivetted to the brackets. This rivetting of the cups should be done away with as it is not at all necessary and entails removing the whole of the bracket from the channel for any modification made to the rubbers.

We first of all balanced the engine without the rubbers fitted, then made the length of the top rubbers plus the cups to just push into position. The bottom rubbers were then fitted the distance tube being shortened to prevent it becoming choc-a-bloc. No compression at all was placed upon the rubbers which were fitted to take the torque of the engine only. With this arrangement the whole weight of the engine is taken by the front central mounting and rear end of gear box. The torque reaction dampers with cotton duck washers were set to give a friction load of 2 - 5 lbs at the end of the lever.

We suggest with the "Diamond" mounting we might reconsider the design of the rear engine feet as they now have a very different job to do.
