Contd:- -2- The conclusions which we draw from these figures are :- (a) That the apparatus used is not sufficiently sensitive to accurately ascertain small losses. (b) With no oil in the gear box we have shown there is a small gain in HP. on direct drive due to absence of oil churning, but that this at the maximum is only about 1HP. (c) Our figures show that the losses on indirect gears must be very small. In point of fact, our results show a gain in power which is, of course, absurd, and can only be attributed to the inefficient measuring apparatus. We checked the brake afterwards for stiff joints, variation of readings under different sluice openings, ZERO error, and wt. variation. The only errors we found were (1) an error of ½ lb. + on the zero reading - (2) a slight discrepancy in the magnitude of the weights.
